As the English punk rock band the Clash once asked, “Should I stay or should I go?” Ahh, now that is a great question. Sometimes you already know the answer, but sometimes you’re spinning in circles and you just can’t land on it. Your heart says one thing, your mind says another, and you’re no closer to an answer than when you started. That’s when it might be time to reach for your pendulum.
In this guide, you’ll learn how to use a pendulum to get accurate answers, avoid common beginner mistakes, and build confidence in your intuition. For many people, pendulums are the perfect choice for yes-or-no questions. When you feel stuck between two choices, or your emotions are clouding your thinking, a pendulum can help cut through the crap and give your inner wisdom a clear voice.
A pendulum is one of the simplest and oldest divination tools available. People have used forms of dowsing for thousands of years to locate water, minerals, and even lost objects. In the same way a dowser uses rods or a forked stick, a pendulum can be used as a tool for receiving guidance through subtle signals from your intuition.
Now, if you’ve ever tried using a pendulum before and felt like it didn’t work, you’re not alone. Most beginners struggle at first. The pendulum might move inconsistently, or not move at all. Sometimes the answers feel unclear, or you may wonder if you’re influencing the movement without realizing it. That's a great question.
The good news is that using a pendulum is a skill, and like any skill, it improves quickly with a little practice and the right approach. Once you understand how to choose a pendulum, prepare it properly, and ask clear questions, the process becomes surprisingly accurate.
In this post, you’ll learn how to choose the right pendulum, how to prepare both yourself and the tool, and most importantly, how to get accurate answers when using a pendulum for yes or no guidance. I’ll also share a few simple exercises that will help you build confidence and develop your skills quickly.
If you’re completely new to pendulum dowsing, don’t worry. By the time you finish reading, you’ll have everything you need to get started.
What Is Pendulum Divination?
Pendulum divination is a form of dowsing, a practice that uses simple tools to detect subtle energetic responses. While dowsing rods are often used to locate underground water or minerals, a pendulum works in a slightly different way. Instead of searching for something in the ground, the pendulum is typically used to receive intuitive guidance on yes-or-no questions.
A pendulum itself is very simple. It’s usually a small weight—made of metal, wood, glass, or stone—attached to a chain or cord. When you hold the chain and allow the weight to hang freely, it can begin to swing in different directions.
Those movements are what we interpret as answers to our questions.
Now, before anyone starts imagining mysterious invisible forces pushing the pendulum around, let’s talk about what is actually happening.
The movement of the pendulum is generally caused by tiny, unconscious muscle movements in your hand and fingers. These movements are sometimes called the ideomotor effect (micro-muscle responses). They are so small that you usually aren’t aware you’re making them, but they are enough to cause the pendulum to swing.

Your subconscious mind and intuition are constantly processing information in the background. Pendulum work simply gives those subtle signals a physical way to express themselves.
In other words, the pendulum isn’t really giving you answers. It’s helping your intuition speak in a way you can see.
I often explain it this way: a pendulum is just a tool, much like a hammer. A skilled carpenter chooses the right hammer for the job, one that has the right size, weight, and balance. But the hammer can’t build anything by itself. It still requires the carpenter's skill to use it.
Pendulums work the same way. They don’t contain magic and won’t answer questions on their own. It simply responds to the subtle signals coming from the person holding it. Your body is much smarter than your brain at interpreting subtle energies.
Once you understand that, pendulum work becomes much less mysterious and much more practical. It’s simply a tool that helps you focus your attention, quiet the mental chatter, and allow deeper insight to surface.
And like any tool, the results improve the more you practice using it.
Choosing the Right Pendulum
The first step in using a pendulum is choosing one that feels comfortable to work with. Like any tool, pendulums come in different shapes, materials, sizes, and weights.

Many people are drawn to crystal pendulums, and that’s perfectly fine. Different stones are often associated with distinct symbolic meanings, and some practitioners choose a pendulum based on those qualities.
However, it’s important to remember that accuracy comes from the person using the pendulum, not the material it is made from.
What matters most is that the pendulum feels balanced and comfortable in your hand.
If you’re shopping for a pendulum in person, you might notice that some pendulums seem to move slightly when you first approach them. Many people interpret this as a sign that the pendulum resonates well with their energy. If one feels particularly comfortable or responsive, that may be a good choice for you.
Crystal pendulums do sometimes hold energetic “imprints,” so they need to be cleared before use. Metal pendulums—especially those made from copper or sterling silver—are excellent conductors of subtle energy and are less likely to hold residual charge. For that reason, some practitioners prefer metal pendulums when accuracy is especially important.
But again, the most important factor is how the pendulum feels to you. Hold the chain between your fingers and let the weight hang freely. Does it feel balanced? Does it swing easily? Does the chain length feel comfortable?
If you pick up a pendulum and it just feels right, trust your instincts. Remember, the pendulum itself is just a tool. The real magic—if you want to call it that—comes from your ability to quiet the noise in your mind and allow your intuition to guide the movement.
Once you have a pendulum that feels comfortable in your hand, the next step is preparing both the pendulum and yourself before asking your first question.
Preparing Your Pendulum for Use
Before asking your first question, it helps to take a moment to prepare both yourself and the pendulum. This doesn’t have to be complicated. Some people prefer a full ritual, while others simply take a few deep breaths and focus their thoughts.
Either way, the goal is the same: create a calm, neutral state so you can receive clear answers. Let’s start by preparing yourself.
Preparing Yourself

Just as important as the pendulum itself is your state of mind when you begin a divination session.
Take a few slow, deep breaths and allow your body to relax. If your mind is racing or your emotions are stirred up, it can influence the answers you receive. Pendulum work is much easier when you are calm, focused, and emotionally neutral.
Some people like to take a moment to ground themselves before beginning. One simple method is to close your eyes and imagine energetic roots extending from the bottom of your feet deep into the Earth. This visualization helps many people feel calmer, more stable, and centered.
You may also want to create a simple protection bubble before starting your session.
Imagine a sphere of light surrounding your body like an egg-shaped bubble. This bubble becomes your protected space where negativity cannot enter, allowing you to focus completely on the work you are about to do.
Many people find that taking just a minute to visualize this protective space helps them relax and feel more confident during their divination session.
Others prefer to say a short prayer or spend a few moments in meditation before beginning. Any method that helps you feel calm, centered, and focused will improve the clarity of your results.
The key is not the ritual itself. The key is entering the session with a calm mind and clear intention.
Three Steps to Prepare Your Pendulum for Accurate Answers
Once you feel centered and ready, the next step is preparing the pendulum itself.
There are three simple steps to take each time you begin a new divination session:
Clear the pendulum of any lingering energy so it returns to a neutral state.
Charge the pendulum. Like charging a battery, this gives the tool energy and makes the answers easier to read.
Calibrate the pendulum. This step is critical so you know exactly what movement represents yes, no, or maybe.
Clear the Pendulum
Clearing removes any lingering or unintended energy so the pendulum begins from a neutral state. There are several simple ways to do this. You can lightly tap the pendulum and command it to “Clear!”, or pass it through incense or cleansing smoke.
I generally don’t recommend saltwater baths for pendulums because they can damage the chain.
Charge the Pendulum
Next, charge the pendulum with your intention.
Hold it in your hands while taking a few slow breaths, or say a short blessing over it. A simple intention works perfectly well. For example: “Blessed for accuracy, balance, and peace. May clear answers come with clarity, and may my heart remain open to truth.” The exact words aren’t important. What matters is setting your intention for the session.
Calibrate the Pendulum
After clearing and charging the pendulum, the next step is calibration. This simply means asking the pendulum to indicate whether the movement is “yes,” “no,” or sometimes “uncertain” or "ask another way."
Hold the pendulum steady and ask:
“Show me yes.”
“Show me no.”
“Show me uncertain” or “ask again.”
Watch how the pendulum moves for each command and make a mental note of it. Some pendulums swing back and forth for yes, while others may move in a circle.
Every person’s responses can vary slightly, which is why calibration is important. For the most accurate answers, I calibrate every time I begin a new divination session.
Once you’ve completed those three steps, you’re ready to begin asking questions.
In the next section, we’ll look at how to formulate the perfect yes-or-no question to get clear responses.
How to Use a Pendulum to Get Accurate Yes or No Answers

Now that you and your pendulum are prepared, it’s time to start asking questions.
Pendulums work best with clear yes-or-no questions. The simpler and more direct the question, the easier it is for the pendulum to respond with a clear movement.
This is where many beginners run into trouble. They ask complicated questions, emotionally loaded questions, or questions that actually contain multiple parts. When that happens, the pendulum may give weak movements or answers that feel confusing. So the first rule is simple: keep your questions clear and direct.
For example, imagine you’re trying to decide whether to take a new job.
A question like this will confuse your pendulum:
“Should I take the new job or stay where I am?”
That question actually contains two different possibilities. The pendulum doesn’t know which one you want answered. Instead, break it into two separate questions.
Ask: “Is taking the new job the best choice for me right now?”
Then ask: “Is staying in my current job the best choice for me right now?”
Clear questions produce clearer answers.
If you’re really interested in taking the job but get a “no,” try asking a clarifying question. For example: “Is taking the new job the best choice for me in six months?” or “Is there a better job waiting for me right now?”
Follow-up questions like these can help you narrow down what may be producing the “no” response, especially if you’re ready to make a career change.
Another important key is to remain emotionally neutral when asking your question. If you strongly want a particular answer, your body may unconsciously influence the pendulum’s movement.
Take a breath, relax your shoulders, and allow the pendulum to move naturally.
Hold the chain between your thumb and forefinger so the pendulum hangs freely. Keep your hand steady and relaxed. Once the pendulum settles, ask your question out loud or silently in your mind.
Then simply watch.
The pendulum will begin to move in the direction you established during calibration. Some people see a response almost immediately, while others may need a few seconds for the movement to build. Try not to rush the process or force the pendulum to move. Let the answer develop naturally.
If the pendulum gives a weak or confusing response, don’t panic. It usually means the question needs clarification, or that you may be too emotionally invested in the outcome.
In that case, pause, take a breath, and try asking the question again more simply.
With a little practice, asking clear yes-or-no questions becomes second nature. And the clearer the question, the easier it is for your pendulum to give a reliable answer.
Common Pendulum Mistakes Beginners Make
Like any skill, pendulum dowsing gets easier with practice. Most beginners struggle at first—not because the pendulum isn’t working—but because of a few very common mistakes.
The good news is that once you recognize these habits, they are easy to correct.
One of the most common mistakes is asking confusing or emotionally loaded questions. If you strongly want a particular outcome, your body may unconsciously influence the pendulum’s movement. Remember, the pendulum responds to tiny signals from your body. When your emotions are intense, those signals can become stronger and less objective.
If this becomes a consistent issue, I would suggest moving to a metal pendulum. Copper won’t hold an emotional or energetic “charge” the way a crystal pendulum can. If accuracy is critical, then a metal pendulum may be a better choice.
Another common mistake is asking the same question over and over again.
Let’s say you ask a question and the pendulum gives you a clear “no.” If you keep asking the same question repeatedly, hoping for a different answer, the results will usually become weaker or inconsistent.
Take a moment to review your question and narrow it down as outlined in the previous section. If you continue asking the same question despite receiving a clear answer, it’s possible you’re no longer seeking guidance—you’re trying to negotiate with yourself, even though you already know the answer.
When that happens, it’s better to pause and repeat the three preparation steps: Clear, Charge, and Calibrate. If you’re still having trouble, step away and come back to the question later. You might also consider switching to a metal pendulum if emotional influence continues to be a problem.
Fatigue can also affect your results. If you’re tired, distracted, or mentally scattered, your pendulum responses may be weak or inconsistent. A short break, a few deep breaths, or stepping away for a while can make a surprising difference.
Finally, some beginners try too hard to force the pendulum to move. Remember, the pendulum responds to very small signals. If you tense your hand or focus too intensely on the movement, you may actually interfere with the process.
Relax your hand, ask your question, and allow the movement to develop naturally.
Like learning any new skill, pendulum work becomes easier the more you practice. With a little patience and a relaxed mindset, most of these beginner mistakes tend to disappear on their own.
Simple Practice Exercises for Beginners
Like any skill, pendulum work improves with practice. The more you use your pendulum, the easier it becomes to recognize clear movements and trust the answers you receive.
A great way to build confidence is by practicing with questions where you don’t already know the answer, but where the result can be verified afterward. One of my favorite beginner exercises is something I call Finding the Hidden “Yes.”
Exercise: Finding the Hidden “Yes”

This exercise helps you develop both your intuition and your ability to interpret the pendulum’s movements.
Start by writing the word “yes” on one small slip of paper. On a few other slips, write “no,” and leave a couple blank if you like. Fold all the papers so the writing cannot be seen.
Mix the folded slips together so you don’t know which one contains the word “yes.” No cheating!
Before beginning, take a moment to prepare just as we discussed earlier. Clear, charge, and calibrate your pendulum so it is ready to work with you.
Place the folded slips of paper on the table in front of you. Hold your pendulum above them so it can swing freely.
Now ask a simple question:
“Is the paper with ‘yes’ written on it in this group?”
Observe the pendulum’s response.
Next, begin narrowing down the possibilities by moving the pendulum slowly over the slips and asking questions such as:
“Is the ‘yes’ paper here?”
Pay attention to the pendulum’s movements and allow them to guide you. Continue narrowing down the options until you identify the slip of paper you believe contains the word “yes.”
Then open the paper and see how you did.
Exercises like this help train your mind to recognize the pendulum’s responses and strengthen your connection with your intuition. As you practice, you’ll begin to notice that the movements become clearer and your confidence grows.
You can also experiment with different variations of this exercise. For example, have a friend hide an object somewhere in the room and use your pendulum to narrow down its location. The possibilities are endless, and the more you practice, the more natural pendulum work becomes.
